Taunton Flyer Sportive: Saturday 14th May 2016
RIDE MANUAL IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
The Taunton Flyer sportive is now in its third year. Departing from Taunton Racecourse, the Taunton Flyer is themed around the wartime airfields of East Devon and Somerset. Our routes will take you on an exciting journey where you will dicover the historic airfields of RAF Exeter (Exeter Airport) RAF Dunkeswell, RAF Upottery (Smeatharpe), RAF Culmhead and, new for 2016, RAF Merryfield, and RAF Westonzoyland. This year we will also have a full scale replica of a Spitfire Aircraft (the only one in the world!) on display at the event HQ. Guided tours of the cockpit will be available and there will be a draw prize in support of SSAFA to be able to sit in the aircraft and fire up the Merlin Meteor Engine.
This is a great early season sportive, with lots of nice flat open roads combined with a couple of testing climbs into the Blackdown Hills.
NEW for 2016, the Taunton Flyer offers you a choice of three routes. The Spitfire (55 km / 34 miles), The Dakota (114 km / 70 miles), or the Wellington (178 km / 111 miles). All routes are signed and fully supported and have well stocked feed stations. The Dakota route includes a 'Bail-Out' option at the Dunkeswell Loop that will reduce the distance to 63 miles (100 km).
This sportive is also electronically chip timed and has Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal standards for both age and gender categories. Medals will be awarded to all finishers.
